The Liberia Medical and Dental Council (LMDC) was established by an Act of the National Legislature; “Act Amending part VII chapter 61, of the New Public Health Law known as Title 33 of Liberian Code of Law as revised (1977)” which made it separate from the Ministry of Health and set it up as an autonomous agency with exclusive powers and authority to regulate and monitor the practice of Medicine and it’s member within the Republic of Liberia.
To ensure efficient and effective healthcare standards of Medicine, Dentistry and Alternative Medicine for quality healthcare delivery in Liberia.
To Maintain public confidence in the health system through regulations and guidelines to promote timely response to public concerns
To increase access and utilization of a comprehensive package of quality health services of proven effectiveness delivered to the community, endowed with the necessary resources and supported by an effective system
To enhance effective and efficient communication between health practitioners and the public.
The Liberia Medical and Dental Council has the following functions:
The Council shall register all Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and allied medical professionals within the Republic of Liberia
The Council shall establish the procedure and set guidelines for licensure of Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and allied medical professionals within the Republic of Liberia, and present to the Minister of Health who shall approve same.
The Council shall issue licenses to the qualified and deserving Physicians, Surgeons, Dental Surgeons and allied medical professionals within the Republic of Liberia, that have graduated from recognized and credible medical institutions.
The Council shall establish the procedure and requirements for the registration of medical and allied professionals within the Republic of Liberia.
The Council shall set procedure, guidelines and standards for the accreditation of medical services and health training institutions.
